How to save on Utilities...part 2

So today we are going to chat about your water bill. Lets see, 2 adults + 6 kids = a HUGE water bill. Why is that? Could it be my teenagers L--O---N----G drawn out showers? Or maybe the fact that I have no fewer than 15 loads of laundry a week! UGGGH? (not a huge laundry fan if ya havent noticed)

So how do you cut the water bill without having to turn off the water on my teen mid shower or walk around in stinky clothes? Believe it or not, there are tons of ways to help cut your water bill and help the environment at the same time.

These are some of the easiest and most realistic ones for us to do. I am sorry but I am not gonna be luggin jugs downstairs from the shower, filled with the water I was saving while it heated up. Nope, sorry.

1. Take shorter showers. Obvious, yes...but some need to be told ;-)
2. Dont leave the water run while brushing teeth, doing dishes ect. Think of that old barney song "and we never let the water run...." Geez!
3. Fix leaky faucets and constantly running toilets pronto. There are thousands of gallons of wasted water in a leaky faucet or toilet. By replacing the flapper on your toliet yearly you will also save money by regulating the water control better.
4. Put a full bottle of water in the tank of your toilet. This will displace the water in it and save per flush
5. Be Lazy. Yup...running the dishwasher takes much less water than washing dishes by hand YAY!! yet another excuse for laziness on my part :-)

There are many other large ways to save on your water bill, HE washers, low flow toilets, and low flow shower heads. But since we arent trying to spend money, and certainly arent the slightest bit mechanically inclined I am going to go with the easy ones. How 'bout you?

The other way to do this is to replace your old appliances, as they break or wear out, with energy and water efficient ones. We had to buy a new washer when we moved and got a HE one. Love it! It washes better with less water and less electricity.

Our dishwasher also died not too long ago and we also chose an energy efficient one. It was no more expensive than the less efficient model so that is no longer an excuse for people.

Hahaha...yes I do have only 4 kiddos...feels like 6 sometimes though!

Frteach, I agree. we also went with the energy efficent dishwasher, but we couldnt justify the price increase when our dryer went out to get one of the new sets. We just replaced the dryer since the washer works fine. Thanks for the insight!
