Cheap fun for kids

Although it is summertime, it is still a struggle to find things to do during thos rainy yucky days. In being the frugal mommy that I am, I tend to search for free or low cost solutions and activities to this problem.

My kids absolutely love art projects. Give them any type of craft supply and they will have a ball literally for hours. As they age, the more complicated the design becomes.

I have done some searching online and have found some great recipes to make my own craft supplies simply and easily and most importantly...cheaply!

Homeade Watercolors:
Mix:
3 Tbs cornstarch
1.5 tsp corn syrup
3 Tbs baking soda
3 Tbs white vinegar
This will pop and fizz as you combine them :-)

Then you can add food coloring to make whatever colors you would like. Store in small airtight containers. (baby food jars work well)

Homeade Playdough:

Mix:
1 cup cold water
1 cup salt
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
Tempera paint or food coloring (enough to make the color bright)
Then add
3 cups flour
2 tablespoons cornstarch

It should be the consistency of bread dough. make sure that you store it in a covered container.

I am sure that there are plenty more recipes for craft supplies that you all have perfected. Please share them in the comments so we all can enjoy!
